I was reminded reading this of an old EW article that talked about the introduction of the Night Sisters in 'Clone Wars.' The reviewer says:

"Supervising director Dave Filoni told me recently that the Nightsisters use a kind of magic, but, to be honest, nothing I saw in this episode contradicted my previous understanding of Dathomir’s witches—that they do use the Force but access it via different means than the Jedi: through incantations and rituals instead of mental concentration and meditation."

It links to an interview with Dave Flioni, where he says this about the Nightsisters:

"They are something the average viewer has not seen before. They’re not Sith. They’re not Jedi. According to George, they don’t use the Force. They have a magic all their own. If you remember one of the first Nightsisters was Charal from Ewoks: The Battle for Endor. Charal was a witch on Endor who used a type of magic that wasn’t the Force. So they’ve been around for awhile!"

Whoa!!! I hadn’t seen these (sidebar, it’s very cool that EW was covering TCW like this back in the day). I feel like the Filoni quote supports what I was thinking -- that the Witches are unlike anything else in SW. Thanks for sharing!

My pleasure! And yeah, it was cool that EW did that. I recall being a little sad when they stopped coverage of TCW not too long after.
