Ayyyyyyyyyye I didn’t expect to get a shout out!

I’m a humongous fan of poor things. I think it’s a stone cold classic and among yorgos’ movies, I only like The Lobster more. It’s a movie chock full of my type of weird. I really appreciated the philosophy and film theory discussed in this. I agree with Jen that the movie is at its best when Bella is questioning societal standards and norms that we’ve long accepted. I feel like the movie drags during Jerrod Carmichael’s part of the movie and I believe he’s horribly miscast. I’m a big fan of his comedy and think he’s great in “on the count of three” but he doesn’t work in this imo. Ramy is so great and underrated in this. And so is Dafoe. This might be sophomoric but I died everytime I saw the burp bubbles.

It’s good to be back btw! I had to take a hiatus on all pop culture podcasts the past 2-3 weeks because it’s baseball draft season and I had to do a bunch of studying and catch up. But yall the first podcast I picked up before everyone else.

I think you are hitting on what I have too reluctant to admit about Jerrod Carmichael. I like him as an actor (I also enjoyed him in "On the Count of Three!") and liked the role that the character of Henry plays in Bella's development a lot. But something about his intonation and delivery just felt out of place. Maybe I wanted him to be more suave or charming? Or maybe I wanted him to have an accent? (Let's get the Maestro vocal coach in here lol)

I liked the character but it also felt like magical negro at the same time. as well as bella's lover later on (who feels more one dimensional than Carmichael's character). I still love the movie to bits but i think that's a flaw too.
