Oh wow. Very flattered and honored you guys read a part of my letterboxd review during the podcast. I let out an audible Keanu reeves “whoa” in the car.
I agree that as much as I love this movie….there is no Oscar watch for it. This isn’t the typical type of movie that’s nominated for the Oscars. Action movies don’t usually get Oscar love. Co-sign (I think it was PT) there is always 1-2 Oscar baity movie that is not as good as a lot of movies that should be nominated but get nominated anyways as well.
Jen! Your observation that the mixed martial arts matches were a microcosm of the movie and caste culture was how I viewed it as well!
I think at the beginning of the podcast you guys called it a revenge movie and I slightly disagree. I feel like it’s a justice movie which are similar but parallel? Idk if that makes sense.
Btw the movies id compare monkey man to is la haine, tower of death, and get out.
Also, idk if you guys noticed how many southeast asians there were as opposed to south asians even though it's strongly implied during the movie that the setting is a fictional city in India. My first time watching it as someone from the Indian subcontinent (Bangladesh), I was kind of thrown off because I was like "there are a lot of people in this movie that don't look Indian". But then I found out that primary shooting of the movie took place in Indonesia.
I did pause at a couple of the background actors or minor characters in some of the fight scenes (maybe the not King’s brothel?). But I had chalked it up to my own ignorance. Good to know I was vaguely onto something! Covid filming in Indonesia probably meant they didn’t have much access to background actors outside of Indonesia?
I see what you mean because the desire for vengeance isn’t purely personal. I didn’t say this on the episode but I was thinking it was a social justice revenge fantasy? Or is that just too many words to string together lol.
