Dropping this before Thanksgiving was a hammer to me. I started it on the tuesday before thanksgiving and then finished it this morning. Whew. I unfortunately forgot a lot of what I wanted to say from before thanksgiving lol.

Shout out to Greg for mentioning The Warriors album that i've been meaning to get to but Tyler and then Kendrick coming out soon in the weeks after have really derailed me. I have a love/hate with Lin-Manuel but I will always give him a shot.

As for this movie, I definitely lean towards the PT side of things. Problematic issues aside, I thought this movie was all over the place which made it feel like a collection of moments rather than something cohesive and coherent. And there were moments that I love.....the dinner scene when Rita figures out who Emilia is at the beginning of the second act in particular. Jen mentioned how so many genres were happening at once but i don't think it felt like it blended together as much as it was each scene was a different thing altogether. I am indifferent to musicals as movies but i don't hate them (I much prefer stage/broadway musicals than watching them on the screen). I'm not going to get into the problematic issues because I think you guys spoke on them pretty clearly but they did bother me. Like the kid smelling her father on emilia.....any medical professional would be able to tell you that once you introduce hormones for gender transition, you will smell differently (and there was a letterboxd review that I saw that touches on this as well). That isn't a laymen's criticism however it does push an thoughtless view of trans people. I don't have a problem with movies that only deal with certain themes/issues on the surface level but just be a little more thoughtful while doing so....not just doing the absolute least. I feel like this movie failed in that regard. Loved Zoe and Garcon in this though. And there were a couple scenes and songs that were pretty dope (Zoe dancing on tables singing about the hypocrisy of government officials was fantastic).

And John Waters' list of his favorite movies came out today and i find his taste (as well as his movies) absolutely fascinating and of course he has Emilia Perez on his list lmao. But I can see why he'd really really enjoy it. I can see why others would enjoy it. But it really really didn't work for me.
