I was listening to this podcast right when Kendrick Lamar dropped and I could feel the culture shift while listening to y’all in the form of group chats and DM groups trying to interrupt my flow 😂.
I think I fall more on the PT and Antonio side of things. I thought the scenes revolving around George were great. And even though Saoirse is great, I found her scenes to be less interesting. It was cool how Mcqueen is able to weave both story lines together as well as the timeline jumps but there is something here that is missing and I think that comes down to the screenplay or the overall storytelling.
I also was asking myself “why is harris Dickinson in this movie?”
I have a hard time believing this movie doesn’t get nominated for best picture. This movie will def get a sound nom as well as best supporting actress and costume noms at the very least. Maybe editing and directing too. The amount of British voters in the academy cannot be understated imo. There will be a push from them to get this movie into the best picture nominations list imo.
I am really on the fence about putting it in my Best Picture predictions right now. From a critical discourse perspective and general buzz perspective it seems to have fallen off a cliff entirely. But the British voter factor you mention is exactly what's keeping it on my list. But realistically what is the path to Best Picture beyond Saoirse and maybe a couple crafts? I doubt it would make it into screenplay and there wouldn't be any other acting noms...I didn't find the editing to be particularly memorable or "extra" either.
