I feel like Greg immediately called immediately called me out as soon as the episode started with the hate on people that compared it to pretty woman and uncut gems 😂. I’m joking but also how dare you, sir.

Jen’s comp of guy Ritchie UK gangster movies blew up my brain. Obviously not as dense but the same vibe and pace.

I loved this movie. You can enjoy it superficially and also as a parable of the American dream. In fact, instead of comparing it to uncut gems and pretty woman, I would have been better off comparing it to The Great Gatsby. I’m glad you guys touched on the criticism of capitalism and how hard it is for people who aren’t in the upper class to break out of their situations (which is a common thread in baker films along with humanizing sex workers). Also, transactional relationships.

One of my favorite things with Baker is how he makes the setting of his movies a character of its own. Brighton Beach/Coney Island/Sheepshead Bay is on full display here. He captures the vibe so well.

I’m glad PT mentioned Best Cinematography in Oscar watch because this is a beautiful movie. Some movies have great shots but it’s for the sake of having great shots at the expense of telling a story and I don’t think that’s the case in this movie at all.

The ending 100% takes this movie to the next level imo. The whole time while watching, I groaned any time there was a shot of Igor looming longingly at Anora. I really thought it was going to end with Anora and Igor ending up together which cute but also, didn’t feel like it was a typical Baker move but that ending really cooled those fears. It really moved me. I think Jen really hit it on the head as to why and Antonio as well.

I really do think beat picture will come down to Anora and The Brutalist with Emilia Perez, Conclave, and Dune 2 on the outside looking in but getting some love. I haven’t seen brutalist or Emilia Perez….just based on tea leaves.
