hey, guys!

PT refused to see this, huh?

I love how Jen was schooling y'all on MMA/UFC while I was listening. I've been a fan since the mid to late 90's and I even trained in MMA (I was a blue belt in American Kickboxing and purple in Brazilian jiu jitsu) but i never fought in a match. Jen is absolutely right that the ground and pound that both Marks specialized in was how a lot of fights ended in the heavyweight division....especially with wrestling practictioners. I used to be a huge fan of fights in the featherweight to middleweight classes because they were much more diverse. There were definitely a lot of specialties like wrestling, boxing, muay thai, BJJ, tae kwon do, karate, etc but over the years some fell very much into favor and out of it based on whichever fighters were either popular or great at the time....even though nowadays most fighters have multiple backgrounds after starting with one primarily. I used to know a kid who was wrestling in high school, was a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, was 20 pounds lighter than me, and he used to kick 30 year old me's ass up and down the mat. and I loved every minute of it.

I'm also familiar with Mark Kerr the fighter but not entirely about his life but familiar enough. Even so, this movie was so meh. Entirely too sleepy. All the beats felt pretty telegraphed. There were some choices that felt so confusing. It might not be true but I felt like this movie might be why the Safdie's broke up.....felt like Benny wanted to do this with the Rock and Josh couldn't care less. I don't feel like The Rock should be nominated for an oscar even though I felt like he was pretty good but I think he will be anyways because of politics. Jen's point about hair and makeup being a strong nomination is a good one. If Benny is nominated for this, I will riot. This is a classic oscar bait movie with lure that isn't enticing.
